That apparently influenced the young man’s impending decision to devote his life to military service. His mother, Frances Aubrey (Holt) Davidson, passed away in 1913. After her death, Garrison’s father married Helen Gladys Skannevin in 1915.

Garrison Holt Davidson attended and graduated from Stuyvesant High School in the East Side of Lower Manhattan in 1923. He had to take the subway from the Bronx to get there. While in school, Garrison obtained membership in the Omega Gamma Delta fraternity. He fulfilled his duties admirably and maintained ties with other members of the fraternity for the rest of his life. As a child, Garrison’s hobby, or rather pastime, was canoeing on the Hudson River.

Success in football

Davidson achieved success in sports during his school years. He actively participated in American football and became a top player on the school’s championship team.

Later, while attending West Point, Garrison Holt Davidson continued to play football and achieved considerable success with the Academy team. Even after graduation, he maintained ties with his Academy football team. In fact, when Davidson returned there in 1930, the officer started coaching the same football team. At the time, he was 29 years old and the youngest head football coach in Academy history.

Davidson had an athletic body structure, with a square jaw and a mountain of muscles. He preferred taking initiative, both in the army and in sports. Thanks to his coaching from 1933 to 1938, the team won 35 times, lost 11 times and drew once.

Starting his army career

After finishing high school, he attended the Military Academy at West Point in 1923 due to his many talents and the wisdom that his peers and superiors recognized in him. In 1927, he completed his studies and was promoted to Second Lieutenant. Following that, a young officer was assigned to the 1st Engineer Regiment of the Corps of Engineers stationed at Fort DuPont, Delaware.

In 1934, Davidson married a girl named Verone Gruenther. It was with her that he lived the rest of his life. Her brother also had a military career and eventually became the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe. Perhaps, this contributed to the young officer’s future career success, or perhaps to that, he owes his talents, which will be discussed further.

Garrison Holt Davidson served as a Company Commander in the 3rd Engineer Regiment in Hawaii starting in 1938. Two years later, he was assigned to California, where he served as a post engineer at Hamilton Army Airfield near San Francisco. Besides the bomber base, there were six fighter squadrons, providing the young engineer with ample work.

Participation in World War II

Davidson met the outbreak of war in California. However, in 1942, he relocated to Washington DC and assumed the role of an assistant chief overseeing the construction of the Pentagon. He held this position until October 1942 when he was promoted and became the assistant chief engineer of the Western Task Force of Allied North Africa.

Operation Torch was planned under the leadership of the prominent General George S. Patton, who led the grouping of troops. After fierce fighting in Africa, the US Army stormed Sicily, with Davidson leading the engineering part of the Seventh Army. Thanks to him, it was possible to organize the landing on the island and create opportunities for rapid movement of Patton’s tank and motorized units. General Patton even removed one star from his uniform to promote and honor Davidson to brigadier general. It occurred in 1943 after one of the battles. Davidson was only 39 years old at the time.

Davidson also served under General Mark W. Clark in the same Seventh Army. After that, he served as an aide to General Dwight D. Eisenhower. Historians credit Davidson with influencing the decision on where Allied troops landed in France. After establishing beachheads in Normandy, Davidson supported the movement of American troops as they advanced through Nazi-occupied French territory. He ended the war as an engineer in the post-war occupation administration of the Fifteenth Army. Later, Davidson became the President of the first Nuremberg War Crimes Tribunal.

The Bronx native’s career after the war

Between 1946 and 1950, Davidson served as the chief of staff of the Sixth Army led by General Mark Clark. The Army headquarters were located in San Francisco, where Harrison Holt Davidson found himself back where his wartime journey began.

The Korean War began in 1950. In one of his interviews, Davidson recounted that right before the war started, he traveled to Japan to meet with General MacArthur, who was in charge of the US forces in the Far East. He said that his wife was Catholic, so she went to church while he was socializing with the general and walking by the pool. Upon her return, she brought the Sunday paper, which contained information about the Communist invasion of South Korea.

The UN appointed General MacArthur to lead its troops in the Korean defense operation. The general tasked Davidson with building engineering fortifications around Pusan (later called Davidson’s Line) and dealing with the 24th Infantry Division as an assistant commander, which was sent to the Korean theater.

In all, he commanded several military formations in that war, including Task Force Davidson. He supervised the construction of the defense line around Seoul and commanded the Korean Military Assistance Group in fighting against Chinese and North Korean forces.

After the war, he worked as a senior advisor for weapons systems at the Pentagon. Davidson then served as the head of the US Army Command and General Staff College for two years. In 1956, Davidson became the Superintendent of the US Military Academy at West Point. The following year, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General. During his four-year tenure, he implemented necessary reforms, including improving the cadets’ curricula and expanding their liberal arts education.

From 1960 to 1962, Garrison Holt Davidson served as commanding general of the US Seventh Army in Europe. He led American troops during the Berlin and Cuban crises and oversaw the reorganization and decentralization of the same army. From 1962 to 1964, Garrison Holt Davidson was commander of the First Army and the US Military Representative to the UN before retiring in 1964.

The Lieutenant General passed away on December 25, 1992, in Oakland, California and found his final resting place in West Point Academy Cemetery. The words inscribed on his tombstone captured what was important to him during his life, ‘Soldier, Coach, Educator, and His Best Teammate.’ He is survived by his wife, six children, fourteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Garrison Holt Davidson, born in the Bronx in the early twentieth century, had a remarkable journey.
