She grew up in a large, friendly family. All day long, the girl played and enjoyed a carefree childhood with her cousins and friends. However, her parents wanted to give their daughter a better future. When Janet was 6 years old, the family moved to the USA, to New York.

The family settled in Harlem. The problems began with the fact that local schools were overcrowded. Janet could not be enrolled in a class in this area. Finding a new home was almost impossible, so they decided that Janet would take a bus to school in the Bronx.

At first, it was incredibly difficult. No one in the family spoke English. Janet recalls that her mother pinned a name tag to her clothes at school because she couldn’t even answer the basic question: ‘What is your name?’ However, the shock therapy effect worked, namely her total immersion in an unfamiliar environment. Children adapt quickly to new conditions and more easily accept radical changes. It was much harder for Janet’s parents to get used to the new life. Still, they always supported their daughter. The girl’s father initially found work as a driver. However, he was so worried about Janet that he persuaded her school administration to hire him as an assistant.

In her interviews, Janet recalls:

‘For a long time, I couldn’t communicate with the children on an equal footing. There, she met the Dominican, a member of the City Council Pierina Sanchez, who immediately appreciated the purposefulness and high level of professionalism of the ambitious compatriot. Janet always tried to cover projects related to immigrants. This topic was especially painful and close to her. Wherever she worked, there was always a strong involvement in the issues of vulnerable populations. Peguero always sought to help the weak and helpless.

In the public sector, at the Vance Center for International Justice, Peguero organized a network of law firms that provided free legal services in Latin America and Africa. At the New York City Department of Small Business Services, Janet managed free legal services and developed a commercial rental assistance program. Working as a senior zoning manager in the Bronx, she focused on access to city services for all who need it and the development of the local economy. Janet also served as the Bronx borough director for Amplify Her, an organization that supports women in politics.
